JUNE 17, 1952: John Whiteside Parsons, a pioneering rocket engineer at Caltech and a founding member of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, blew himself to kingdom come one night in his Los Angeles mansion. The mansion had been the site of many black magic rituals, including drug-induced sex orgies hosted by Parsons, who was an ardent follower of notorious occultist Aleister Crowley. Many believed Parsons was following a recipe from one of Crowley’s sacred texts to conjure a homunculus—an otherworldly being whose magic powers would be at Parsons’s disposal—when the experiment blew up in his face.

I'm feeling really down today for some reason. More and more as the day goes on.
I think I'm mostly just tired. This new exercise and diet routine is almost kicking my ass. But I've lost 5 lbs. since Monday, according to my scale. And it's read that for 2 days, so I figure it must be more than just water weight. Besides, I'm drinking 2 to 2 1/2 liters of water per day. I've been running a calorie deficit of about 800 for 3 days now.
But I am tired. Trying to create new habits is about as difficult as breaking bad habits.
Then there is my money problem. I try so damn hard to keep my check book balanced. But yesterday I discovered a major mistake. And not in my favor. There goes some of my $2000.00 tax refund!

Libya disappears from the Internet By Kieren McCarthy Published Tuesday 13th April 2004 14:54 GMT Libya has disappeared from the Internet and no one seems to be able to explain why.
Late on Friday, all .ly domains stopped working and they're still not up now. The administrative and technical contact for the country's Internet presence have not answered phone calls or emails at their Tripoli office.
However, one intriguing clue has come from company Lydomains.com - the company charged with selling all .ly domains and which, oddly enough, is based in Macclesfield in the UK. Lydomains.com put out an email on Friday which read: "It is with regret that we have to inform you, that due to unilateral action by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (http://www.iana.org), the Domain Name Servers that host the zone files for the ccTLD .ly have been disabled.
"The ccTLD .ly has made repeated official requests to the above authority to relocate the Name Servers to an independent environment, to ensure the continued operation of the .ly zone. Unfortunately, these requests, so far, have been declined by IANA.
"Despite our best efforts to maintain the continued operation of the .ly zone, its failure today is totally outside our control... Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that may be caused. We will endeavour to keep you informed of any future developments."
This is backed up by a quick check over the Net. Libya's top-level domain doesn't appear to point anywhere at all. It should have primary and secondary name servers where all the details of .ly domains are contained. But nothing. In short, .ly has ceased to exist.
IANA is the California-based organisation that decides how Internet domains all over the world are allocated. Its role was, and is, supposed to still be, completely technical and non-political, although over the past few years, the Internet overseeing organisation ICANN has used the "IANA function" to move country domains or restrict changes being made to them in order to persuade people to sign up to a contract that would recognise ICANN as the ultimate authority in Internet matters.
Has IANA again be used to attempt to force people into behaving how it wants? If so, in this case, it has caused an entire country to be taken off the Internet - something that someone will surely have to explain. If that is the case, it has set an extremely dangerous precedent and would appear to confirm many people's fears over how an American organisation can hold the rest of the world to ransom.
Unfortunately, it has so far been impossible to verify what is going on. Lydomain.com is not answering its phone or email. IANA has failed to make any mention of any dispute with Libyan domains or, in fact, make any reference to it at all. ICANN equally has no suggestion as to what is going on. And the Libyans themselves are not answering their phones and, presumably, do not have any email.
Not a very nice way to treat what is apparently a friend of the West again. ®

I am a total computer invalid. All this time since I bought my new laptop and I thought that when I used Windows Media Player to copy a CD to the hard drive that it was saving as an MP3. Silly me. At least I finally found the "Any Key" and stopped using the CD tray as a cup holder.

I just finished chatting online a little with . He's really depressed. I want to say more here, but I'll have to make it Private. Just thought he might like to know that people do care.
I really wanted to give him advice. I always want to give people advice. Not to be smarter than them. I know I'm not. But because I always want to help people. But most of the time I feel like anything I could offer would not be any help. It's a conundrum. A quandary. And some other words that I'm most likely using wrong.
Ok, I got distracted. Tom Hanks is on Letterman. I think I'd add him to my list of famous people I'd like to know someday. Although I think I'd rather know Steve Martin. As if I'd ever have the chance to actually have to choose!

9:09 pm - anniversary trip details (so far)
|
Leave on May 28th after work and head up I-5. Stop in Grants Pass at a motel/hotel TBD. Leave the next day for Seaside. Spending 3 nights (free of charge to us!) at the Shilo Inn Suites. East. Not the one on the boardwalk, but a couple blocks in. After that, head down the coastal 101 route to Jessie Honeyman State Memorial Park for 3 nights of "luxury" camping in a Yurt. Hopefully we'll get to stop at the Tillamook creamery on the way down. After that, head inland to Grants Pass again for more "luxury" camping at the Valley of The Rogue State Park. Unfortunately, none of the camps had yurts open for five nights which led us to split it up. Total cost of lodging less than $250.00. That leaves only food (most of which we'll cook ourselves) and gas. Not bad. And a HELLOFALOT cheaper than our honeymoon was. I can't wait! Now I just have to get in shape before the trip. And finish Jenn's grad present and anniversary present. And deal with all the shit that I'm sure life will throw in the way before then. I'm ready for you!

I guess you can tell I haven't been in much of a writing mood lately. I don't know why. A lot going on I guess.
I spent most of the weekend doing chores and watching the first season of Six Feet Under that I got at the library. What an amazing show! I'm not sure what else to say about it. I think it's more that there's too much to say. Sometime soon I actually want to decide what I want to happen when I die. It seems weird to even think about it. Even weirder to actually be happy to think about it.
And even weirder than that, Jenn said that by watching the show before bed, she hasn't had any of her usual death-nightmares.
Yesterday was the beginning of the bocce season. Only the second time I've ever played. But I got a lot of compliments from some experienced players on my shooting. They all agreed all I really need to practice is my throwing strength. I don't know how much was just because I'm the new player or what, but it was still fun to hear. I wish I had my own set of balls so I could actually practice during the week. Otherwise, the only practice I'll get will actually be at the games! And Jody said he expects this to be quite a competitive season. I want to make sure I'm good enough to compete--at least at a level to keep it fun for me and my team.
Jenn came along which was nice. She had a lot of fun watching me play. But mostly I think she just likes it when I show some extroversion with people other than her or my parents.
Of course, due to the 3.5 hours of extroversion, I was completely and totally exhausted when we got home. It didn't help that it was raining off and on during the games so we were cold and damp the whole time.
But in the end, I can't wait until next time I get to play!

1:14 pm - Don't Ride with The Valkyries
|
(04-14) 11:20 PDT LONDON (AP) --
When Richard Wagner composed his powerful "Ride of the Valkyries" in the 1850s, he surely wasn't thinking of any danger he was posing to 21st-century motorists.
Britain's RAC Foundation for Motoring on Wednesday named the strident classical piece the No. 1 tune not to play while driving, based on research it says shows loud music can cause accidents.
The "Dies Irae" from Giuseppe Verdi's "Requiem" was also considered a no-no. The top-five list of tunes to avoid while behind the wheel was rounded out by three modern songs -- "Firestarter" by the Prodigy, "Red Alert" by Basement Jaxx and "Insomnia" by Faithless.
To help music-loving motorists, the foundation also provided a top-five list of songs that may safely be played while driving, "albeit quietly."
Norah Jones' smash hit "Come Away with Me" was deemed calm enough, as was "Mad World" by Gary Jules. Other songs on the safe list were "Another Day" by R&B singer Lemar, "Too Lost in You" by girl group The Sugababes and "Breathe Easy" by boy band Blue.
